Sidewalks on Echo Drive east of Bank Street and Pig Island nestled between boathouses on the canal? Yes, in a certain era.
Through the course of 2016 and 2017, the OSCA Traffic and Safety Committee has been advocating for a safe crossing of Colonel By Drive at a location somewhere between Avenue Road and Bronson Avenue. At the request of the Traffic and Safety Committee, the City of Ottawa and the National Capital Commission entered into discussions to determine if such a pedestrian and bicycle crossing could be possible. It was agreed that it is indeed possible and Seneca Street has been proposed as the potential site.
The City of Ottawa invites visual artists, no matter their medium, to submit an Expression of Interest to participate in a mentorship opportunity to design, fabricate and install an artist-designed public bench.
Construction progress is on schedule although there was a minor delay in creating the Herridge pedestrian crossing of Colonel By Drive. Traffic on Colonel By Drive has largely returned to normal after the slight shifting of the parkway just north of Clegg (this was required to widen the Echo-CBD “island” to accommodate the switchback).
Official sod turning event is September 29, 2017.

LAC Title: Rideau Canal , Ottawa, Mutchmore Bridge
Work to repair the Rideau Canal walls in downtown Ottawa between Bank Street and Pig Island along the Eastern shoreline began in December 2016 and is now nearing completion.
Repairs on the walls themselves are complete and new railings have been installed. Work is now underway to re-install light standards and to repair the Rideau Canal Eastern Pathway. The project will conclude with site re-beautification including laying sod and removing temporary construction trailers as well as other features of the construction site.
Beginning at approximately 9pm on June 8, 2017 the contractor will be removing the safety measures along the southbound lane of Colonel By Drive. A signed detour route will be in place as this work will require the overnight closure of Colonel By Drive in this area. A further notice will be circulated closer to the closure to confirm the date and time.
Once the contractor has fully withdrawn from the site, the Rideau Canal Eastern Pathway will be reopened. This could occur as early as June 9, 2017.

The Bank Street Canal Bridge carries Bank Street along a roughly north – south direction over the Rideau Canal, linking The Glebe to Old Ottawa South. It also passes over Queen Elizabeth and Colonel By drives, each of which extends along one side of the canal.
Old Ottawa South has had many bridges spanning the neighbourhood boundaries over the years.
