Green Dreamers: Shifting with the Times

Green Dreamers launched their fifth Season May 26th, 2018 at the Firehall. This year, instead of hauling compost from the City’s Field facility near Moodie Drive, we bought sheep manure and brown bags from our local Scout troop and associated Beavers, Cubs, and Venturers. We’re always trying to find new ways to make the work a little lighter, a little easier, so instead of wheelbarrows we moved sacks of manure from the front porch of the Firehall (where the Scouts dropped them off) to our vehicles and drove them to the garden beds.

By now you have likely seen the Green Dreamers along Bank Street, cleaning up, removing old growth & winterkill, weeding, turning soil, and yes once again replanting. We’re a determined bunch of gardeners! You may have also noticed that not all the gardens are getting the same amount of attention. As a way to conserve our energies, maintain our commitment and have more fun the Green Dreamers are focussing on gardens that have been adopted. By adopted, we mean the gardens that have designated overseers, or captains. Adopted gardens include the Library, Sunnyside/Bank (3 lots in all), the Firehall, Glen, Grove, Ossington, and Cameron.

Green Dreamers: Wed. Jun. 20 2018 at the Library

Green Dreamers: The City will not be delivering mulch this week. Instead, we will be planting.

We have received a significant donation of native plants from the Fletcher Wildlife Garden at the Central Experimental Farm! The list includes over 40 different plants including 6 varieties of aster, beebalm, Joe-Pye weed, hyssop, nodding onion, prairie smoke, turtlehead, yarrow, and more. All these are available now and they are in need of planting.

Spring Seedling Sale at Brewer Park Community Garden

Brewer Park Community Garden will be hosting a seedling sale on the May long weekend! Please stop by the garden (located in Brewer Park across from the arena) to buy some seedlings and say hello! We will have tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers (hot and sweet), leeks, and basil for sale at very reasonable prices. All proceeds will go towards the maintenance of our amazing biodome structure, which allows us to extend the growing season into the spring and fall.

Windsor Park Spring Cleanup

Windsor Park Spring Cleanup

It started as a crappy morning.  Rain (possible thundershowers) and 7° C; what to do? What to do?  Well, it seemed that Brian had picked up the coffee & Timbits, so there was no turning back. After a rather soggy start, we had 25+ brave souls turn up to what turned out to be a fantastic social gaggle and park cleanup.

Green Dreamers: Welcome to our Fifth Season!

Green Dreamers: Welcome to our Fifth Season!

Yes, we’re back! So, if you see us in the neighbourhood wave, stop for a chat, share some of your gardening insights and suggestions. We are always delighted to see and hear from you. It’s why we garden in Old Ottawa South's public spaces; aside, that is, from the intrinsic rewards of gardening itself.

Spring 2018 begins our fifth season tending public beds along Bank Street and Sunnyside Avenue. And with the passing of winter we are preparing to rethink and “rejig” how we work as volunteer gardeners. So, if you have an opinion or some ideas about how we might do things differently, we’d like to hear from you.
