With summer finally making its way into the city, a Company of Fools is working tirelessly on their latest Torchlight Shakespeare production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Now in their 15th year of Torchlight Shakespeare productions, the Fools will be returning to parks all across the city in hopes of instilling a new appreciation for theatre. Take everything you think you know about traditional Shakespearian theatre and forget it.
The Fools strive to make theatre accessible to all by condensing the famous plays into 90 minute performances, engaging and interacting with their audience, and creating a fun and energetic environment for theatre goers of all ages. They also operate on a pass-the-hat payment system, which opens up the experience to everyone.
A typical show can have anywhere between three and ten professional actors playing an array of characters, which makes for a hilarious, fast-paced, highly physical show. Behind the scenes is a group of seasoned designers, and production hands that bring Shakespeare’s vision to life with elaborate costumes, set design, and direction.
This year’s production is A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Mary Ellis. Set in a mystical forest, it tells the tale of young love, and what happens when the person you love loves someone else. Combined with Victorian era influences, kings, queens, and fairies the production promises to transport you to another world.
As per tradition the Fools will be returning to Old Ottawa South for not one, but two nights! You can find them in Windsor Park on July 8, 2017 and for the finale show on August 19, 2017. The show begins at 7:00pm and it is suggested that you bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit back and enjoy the show. For a full listing of the Fools’ shows please visit www.fools.ca.
Lisa Thibodeau is the Marketing and Communications Assistant for a Company of Fools, and will be returning to Carleton University in the fall to pursue her degree in Journalism.
