Good For Your Heart, Good For Your Health
Southminster United Church is constantly searching for ways to serve the community and help people incorporate spirituality into their lives in practical and meaningful ways. Throughout time, walking has played a role in the devotional life of people, including prayers and mantra practice while walking, and pilgrimages to sacred sites, to name a few. For some of us, it’s just easier to focus our spirituality when we are moving.
We all know the benefits of being active. Simply walking can reduce stress and improve our physical health. It also has mental health benefits such as increasing mindfulness, restoring connections with the natural world and providing a forum for problem-solving.
So what if we could take the benefits of walking and incorporate contemplative prayer practices, right in our own neighbourhood?
Beginning August 3rd, 2017, Southminster United invites you to participate in a weekly series of contemplative walks running until the end of September. The front lawn of Southminster United Church at 7:00pm will serve as the starting point for participants. Led by our minister Trisha Elliott, each walk will focus on themes such as gratitude, purpose, peace and compassion. Participants will begin their guided walk in silent meditation for the first half of the journey, with the second half devoted to discussing the weekly theme within a group setting on our return back to the church.
Walks will be 7-10km in length, for a duration of about 1.5 hours, depending on the preferred pace of the group. Donations to support this activity are welcome.
Our goal is that people leave our walks feeling more relaxed, open and generally emotionally and physically better. We look forward to seeing you there.
