Ottawa Police Service’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) focus for the month of October is on distracted driving and speeding violations.
Between 2011 and 2015, there were 26,860 traffic collisions, 5,761 injuries, and 18 fatalities involving distracted driving. Likewise in the same time period, there have been 15,850 collisions involving speeding. These collisions resulted in 3759 injuries and 54 fatalities.
The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program helps raise awareness of preventable traffic violations to help to keep our roads safe.
You can assist by reporting neighbourhood traffic violations. Reports of on-going traffic complaints in an area (stop signs, speeding, heavy trucks), distracted driving (texting and driving), not obeying Highway Traffic Act laws can be submitted online here: www.ottawapolice.ca/en/contact-us/Online-Reporting.asp.
