Public Art Online Consultation
Four artists have been shortlisted to participate in a mentorship opportunity to design, fabricate and install an artist-designed public bench. Two artists will be selected to design benches that will be installed on the western side of the Rideau Canal, between the Rideau Canal and the re-landscaped wetland area. One bench will be commissioned specifically to an Algonquin artist.
Capital Ward Councillor David Chernushenko tabled a motion a council on June 27, 2018 to propose a name for the pedestrian-cycling footbridge linking Fifth Avenue in the Glebe and Clegg Street in Old Ottawa East. The recommended name is Passerelle Flora Footbridge in honour of Canadian politician and humanitarian Flora MacDonald.
Advance work on the construction of the multi-use path underpass at Bank Street and Riverside Drive has been postponed due to Barn Swallows nesting under Billings Bridge. Barn Swallows are protected under the Species at Risk Act.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) and the City of Ottawa will be implementing an improved crossing at the intersection of Bank Street and Riverside Drive. We are proposing the creation of an underpass on the multi-use pathway, which will increase user safety by allowing cyclists and pedestrians to cross Bank Street under the bridge.
Construction progress is on schedule although there was a minor delay in creating the Herridge pedestrian crossing of Colonel By Drive. Traffic on Colonel By Drive has largely returned to normal after the slight shifting of the parkway just north of Clegg (this was required to widen the Echo-CBD “island” to accommodate the switchback).
The Canal Footbridge, the Fifth Avenue Bridge, Clegg Footbridge, Rideau Crossing — whatever you’ve been calling it, it’s time to agree on a permanent name for new bridge connecting the Glebe and Old Ottawa East/Old Ottawa South. What name do you suggest?
