AGM 2012: Web/IT Committee Report

The Web/IT Committee is a small group whose primary mission is to run the OSCA website, www.oldottawasouth.ca. Most of the committee’s work is carried out by three people. Gwen Gall is the Web/IT chair and is also the web editor. She is responsible for the website content, specifically the front page articles and the weekly newsletter. Kathy Krywicki has been an active contributor to the site since our redesign two years ago, and this year she took on some of Gwen’s editorial duties. Finally, the administrative and technical aspects of the website are handled by Chris Solar, the web administrator.

For 2011 our focus was to continue to provide Old Ottawa South with a first-rate community website. Our priorities have been and continue to be:

Supporting OSCA’s Activities:

  • Providing online programming guides and the link to online registration.
  • Promotion of OSCA events and meetings.
  • Providing an online archive of all OSCA documents (meeting minutes, reports, etc.)
  • Providing space for committees to publish their own material (e.g. OSWatch).
  • Providing an online archive of all OSCAR back-issues.

Keeping the community informed:

  • The website is an ideal platform for keeping the community informed of neighbourhood and city issues and coming events, especially when time is of the essence.
  • We produce a weekly news and events email newsletter that is mailed to 460 subscribers, plus another 37 followers on Twitter. These numbers are up almost 40% from last year.
  • We see well over 7000 visits to the site per month.

In the coming year we will be expanding the site to include an Old Ottawa South business directory. Two community members outside the committee are doing the work to acquire, organize, and manage this information, and we are providing the web platform on which to build it.

We are always interested in having more help on the committee. If you are interested in contributing articles, events, or photographs, let us know! Likewise, if you have any ideas about ways we can improve the site, we’d love to hear from you.
