Web/IT Committee Report for 2013 OSCA AGM

Web/IT Chair: Gwendolyn Gall webeditor@oldottawasouth.ca

Both Kathy Krywicki, as lead Web Editor, and Gwendolyn Gall, as Web/IT Chair and contributing Web Editor, with Christopher Solar as Web Admin and Web Designer, have worked effectively and tirelessly this past year; all have expressed a keen interest in their work and a need for volunteer assistance.

Volunteer work can be applied to high school hours for the right volunteers: we've got writing, editing, proofreading, learning simple HTML using a WYSIWYG editor, adding photographs and images…lots of fun, and not just for students! Look around the website and see where you and your skills can fit in or be developed, send us an email and we will follow through with arrangements.

We’d also like to work with IT types to advance on upgrades, social networking enhancements, and anything else OSCA may dream of! This is a time of great change in the way societies, businesses, even individuals with local stories to tell, either in the print OSCAR or the website – whichever platform seems appropriate. This communications team has great opportunities, and I'm thrilled for those going forward as they join and keep us vibrant and new, with all the social network opportunities and technologies.

The Web/IT committee continues to provide OSCA with a vibrant, active website. In addition to our usual tasks–promoting and posting program information and registration, running the event calendar, posting community news, promoting special events, and archiving the OSCAR and all OSCA documents–this past year saw a couple of additional activities.

One was the overhaul and upgrading of most of the software that underpins the website. This significant effort may not be very noticeable to the end user, but it’s an important part of keeping the website up to date and as secure as possible.

Secondly, we implemented a Business Directory for all Old Ottawa South businesses and organizations. The directory is run by volunteers outside OSCA (Isla Jordan, Gail Stewart) but we provided the technical expertise required to implement it, and the directory is being hosted on the OSCA site.

Web Editor: Kathy Krywicki webeditor@oldottawasouth.ca

The Old Ottawa South website, www.oldottawasouth.ca, continues to grow as the neighbourhood recognizes the importance of this ‘go-to’ place for community information. This year has seen a big increase in the number of stories, photos, announcements, and events as people communicate, publicize, and archive material about Old Ottawa South.

We gather, edit, and publish information for and about the neighbourhood. We continually post new content and we compile and send the latest updates to our subscribers on a weekly basis.

The number of visitors to the website continues to climb and our weekly e-newsletter “Between the Bridges” is an easy way to keep up-to-date on the neighbourhood news.

The website platform is designed to allow users to add information they’d like to share. Please consider contributing as we’d very much like to receive your input. We’d like to keep building this valuable community asset, with your help.
