Jackie Pothier thoughtfully circles the burly bur oak with its leafy branches and thick, grooved bark. The tree, an impressive 17 metres tall and around 170 years old, its base ringed with ferns, hostas and geraniums, anchors Bellwood Parkette’s round shade garden just north of Cameron Ave. Pothier’s eyes rove the canopy. Two high-up, massive limbs are braced with a cable, but that’s been there for years. Her gaze is drawn instead to several smallish dead or dying branches: do they signify a problem? Is the tree struggling?

The Old Ottawa South Community Association (OSCA) has expressed its support for a letter addressed to Mayor Sutcliffe, which calls for complete transparency in the financial and risk analysis of Lansdowne 2.0. Signed by prominent figures, including Kevin Page, Michael Wernick, Joanne Chianello, Paul Champ and Penny Collenette, the letter emphasizes the importance of providing the public with comprehensive information regarding the project’s financial implications.
The City is developing a dedicated Trees and Forests Outreach and Engagement Strategy to enhance existing programs and incentives and create new opportunities for the community to further understand and care for its trees and forests. The strategy is a recommendation of the City’s Urban Forest Management Plan.
