Green Dreamers Update: Mulching and More!

Print Email

Here are three Green Dreamer gardening dates to choose from:

  • Friday, July 21, 2017 at 9:00 a.m.
    Location: Library
  • Saturday, July 22, 2017 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.
    Location: Firehall
  • Wednesday, July 26, 2017 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.
    Location: to be determined

On Friday morning, Christine & Mike Bradley will be transplanting a lovely selection of plants from Krysia's garden on Riverdale. These mature succulents & generous clumps of groundcover were chosen with the empty Bank Street planter in mind. Mike & Adam also plan to do a little "mulching."

On Saturday, July 22nd, Green Dreamers will meet at the Firehall to finish clearing the remaining mulch (Brian Ure has a plan) and to do a little light weeding & trimming on the lovely, side garden facing Fairbairn Ave. If your preference is to help beautify the mature side garden on Fairbairn, please bring your trowels, clippers, gardening seats, and gloves.

There isn't a lot of "mulching" left. So much was accomplished on Wednesday that I'm still a little tongue-tied and overwhelmed by the exuberance and the sheer endurance of our Green Dreamer volunteers who not only "showed up" but who went beyond what was expected or anticipated.

On Wednesday we received two truckloads of fine black mulch from the City, one load arrived at the Firehall around 8:30 a.m., the other arrived at Grove around 10:00 a.m., thirty minutes from "closing time" (our shifts are usually two hours long, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.).

Slowed down by an injured knee, I kept suggesting to Green Dreamers that we call it a day and finish "mulching" this Saturday but for some reason no one listened. They just kept on hauling mulch from one site to another, spreading, trimming, and bagging weeds. These core gardeners seemed to have their own momentum and when finally I left around noon, there were still Green Dreamers spreading, sweeping, and moving brown bags to make the afternoon City pick-up schedule.

So BRAVO fellow Green Dreamers. A special shout-out to Brian Tansey (champion weeder), Brian Ure & Michael Bradley (champion wheel barrow men & spreaders), Jill, Martha & Barbara (champion wheel barrow women & spreaders), and Christine (champion trimmer, weeder, spreader). I hope I got everyone! You were absolutely tremendous. Please take a great big bow. You deserve it!

Mulch Day

On Wednesday, July 19th, the City delivered two truckloads of mulch at two different sites: the Firehall plus Grove & Bank. The mulch will help us keep the weeds at bay and retain moisture during the months of August & September. A big thank-you to all who helped out!
