Green Dreamers Start of the Season

Old Ottawa South's Green Dreamers will begin the 2017 gardening season on Earth Day, April 22nd. Update: Postponed due to rain until Wednesday, April 26, 2017.

We will meet at the Firehall from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.

As usual we will quickly review what we hope to accomplish Saturday morning and spread out beyond the Firehall should we have enough gardeners to cover more than one site. Our initial focus will likely be an early spring cleanup and perhaps a walkabout to determine the general condition of the beds we worked on last season.

Planting for 2017

planting bulbs

On Tuesday, October 18, 2016, junior and senior kindergarten students from Hopewell Public School planted daffodil and tulip bulbs in the public garden bed near the children's playground. Among the bulbs planted were Canada's official tulip, Canada 150, in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday in 2017.

Update: Planting Bulbs!

canada 150 bulbsHello Green Dreamers. Thank you for your This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.s. It would seem from your responses that you are eager to have a pot luck but that the dates might work better if later in the season. Also, judging from the change in temperature, our resources might be best spent planting bulbs and dining later.

We have taken the liberty of ordering 450 "Canada 150" tulip bulbs. We are expecting their arrival some time this week. We have also received donations of 75 Canada 150 bulbs for the library and 225 daffodil bulbs for wherever it pleases us. Of the 500 or so NCC bulbs gathered last spring, we estimate that 235 are likely candidates for planting (the remaining 250 or so are rather small and "iffy"). All in all, we have 985 bulbs to plant!

Little by Little

brian ure As we move into October a familiar anticipation takes hold. After a long, hot and humid summer, we find ourselves adapting once again to cooler temperatures and observing ever more keenly how our daylight is receding, how the sun arrives more slowly and leaves that much quicker.

Update: Sept. 17, 2016

We will meet Saturday, September 17, 2016, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the Library.

Saturday will likely be our last meet before planting bulbs for Spring (date as yet, undecided).

In an earlier note we expressed the possibility of transplanting Russian Sage and mature asters from Brian Williamson's garden on Willard to the Firehall (the garden bed is ready). After further research, however, we have decided to wait until Spring when these transplants might be more successful. Apparently Russian Sage is quite "fussy." We have checked with Brian Williamson and he is in agreement. Green Dreamers are welcome to return in the Spring!

Early September Schedule

Our next Green Dreamers' gardening dates are:

  • Wednesday, September 14, 2016 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.
  • Saturday, September 17, 2016 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.

This Saturday, September 10th, is Old Ottawa South's Porch Sale from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and it seems that a number of our Green Dreamers will be preparing their own individual porches or walking the neighbourhood looking for that special something that can only be found in a garage sale. The Porch Sale is one of OSCA's main annual events and we encourage all of you to help celebrate OOS this Saturday, September 10.
