Taking Care of Business, Thinking Ahead

sunnyside riverdale traffic wp smallSince our last article in November 2014, the OSCA Traffic & Safety Committee has continued to meet monthly, represent OOS at Lansdowne’s Transportation Management Operations Committee, meet with City officials (yes another walkabout in January 2015) and host discussions with residents on issues specific to the streets on which they live (Aylmer, Willard).

Although the work of the Committee continues to be driven by recommendations endorsed by OSCA in September 2013, we are beginning to plan for 2015-2016 and look forward to your feedback, either in written format or at our monthly meetings, the first Tuesday of every month at the Firehall.

A Dazzle of Zebra Stripes

zebra-sunnyside-riverdaleThis last month they seem to be popping up everywhere: zebra stripes at Aylmer & Bank and lately at Sunnyside & Riverdale and yet another dazzle a little further south at Cameron & Riverdale – the latest arrivals in a series of recommendations endorsed by OSCA in 2012.

We seem to be on a roll! The Annual Report of the Lansdowne Transportation Management Operations Committee (LTMOC) is due in April 2015 and now that “big event” planning and the Redblacks season is under control, “everyday operations” will attract more of the attention of the City and LTMOC (not all traffic recommendations come under the Lansdowne Monitoring Plan, some sit squarely with the City and its response to increased traffic in Ottawa).

The Survey acts as a bridge between two official City Studies, one completed in 2012 West of Bank Street, the other initiated in May 2013 East of Bank encompassing Riverdale Avenue & Area, including Sunnyside Avenue East of Bank (results expected late 2013 or early 2014).

Old Ottawa South Traffic Survey

Thank you Old Ottawa South! Your response to this community’s Traffic Survey has been outstanding!

Deadline for the survey was Friday, June 21, 2013.  Since then a review team has been formed, a process established, and a deadline for draft recommendations set for early September.  It’s a big job: total number of responses to the survey is 626 with 285 comments.  The narrative component is significant and it’s important that we give this element of the survey the attention it deserves. Each comment will be reviewed.

In the meantime, we will be working with City officials to share certain elements of the survey to make sure that they are submitted in a timely manner to official parallel processes. For example, the survey includes responses & comments that directly affect the City’s Riverdale Traffic Study.  These will be shared with the City this summer to ensure their consideration under their established community consultation process for traffic studies.

Come September, more detailed data, analysis, and recommendations will be available in the OSCAR & online. So stay tuned.

In the meantime, we would like to share with you some of the following results:
