Ottawa’s Planning Committee recommended approval of the Zoning Bylaw Amendment Application for 1050-1060 Bank Street at its August 27th session.
Our Councilor, Shawn Menard, addressed the hearing and thanked the development team for having consulted with the broader community early in the process and for their willingness to work with his office, with the community, and with City staff and to modify the design considerably in order to address concerns.
Unfortunately, every issue and concern can’t be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction. Community members were split on the decision on whether Aylmer or Euclid was the better street for a parking garage entrance. Councilor Menard requested that City staff study the issue. The professional recommendation was for an entrance off Aylmer.
The development team’s efforts to date have been significant and commendable. As Councilor Menard put it “This is the type of example that we need to see more and more often.” He also noted, among other things, that the team has made a contribution to the Ward 17 Affordable Housing Fund.
Domenic Santaguida and the other development owners are also working with Senior Watch Old Ottawa South and with our Councilor’s office to discuss needed rentals for seniors in our area.
Our community will benefit from the additional housing choices that this building will provide and our Traditional Mainstreet will benefit from a sensitively scaled mixed use building.
OSCA wishes to thank Shawn and his team, Domenic and his team—particularly development team planner Bill Holzman and architect Maurizio Martignago— for having worked with us to revise this Traditional Mainstreet proposal in order to create a building that is a better fit with our community.
We look forward to continuing to work with everyone as this project moves forward through the Site Plan Control process.
