Holiday Giving Gerties are for sale
We thought we would formally introduce ourselves to the Old Ottawa South Community and what better way than an article for The OSCAR. Many of you already know us through the Old Ottawa South Facebook page or by donating used puzzles and books to our annual fundraiser at the porch sale. But for those of you who don’t, Giving Gertie is a local not for profit organization that raises money for numerous charities within the Ottawa Community that help people in need. The main means of expression of the Giving Gertie organization is the Giving Gertie bag.
The Giving Gertie bag is a reusable cloth bag that includes a granola bar, chocolate bar, a $2 Tim Horton’s Gift card and a note of kindness inside. When you purchase the Giving Gertie bag for $5, it is meant to be given out to anyone in need. When a Giving Gertie is shared, a connection is made between both people. There is a communal sense of humanity, compassion and gratitude exchanged. The exchange is often empowering and beautiful and this is the essence of Giving Gertie.
When purchasing a Giving Gertie, 100% of your purchase goes towards your choice of one of the following amazing local charities (listed on our website): The Shepherds of Good Hope, The Ottawa Mission, The Parkdale Food Centre, The Table Community Food Centre and now our very own local Out of the Cold Dinner Service.
We have had so much incredible community support from local businesses. The local businesses that host Giving Gerties for sale are: Oresta in the Glebe and Hintonburg, Morning Owl Cafe in Hintonburg, the Scotia Bank in Old Ottawa South, Ombel Hair Salon, Glebe Health House, the Min-branch Kids Clothing Store, Studio D Clothing, Tag Along Toys and Maker House. We are so grateful to all of these business owners for their community support. If you are aware of other local businesses that would be interested in hosting Giving Gerties, please reach out.
We have recently been offering Giving Gertie’s as favours for weddings and corporate and private parties. They make a lovely socially minded take home gifts for your guests. They are the gift that continue to give. Giving Gerties make a beautiful addition to a table setting at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, or any other celebration where people gather.
We are just entering the season where our Holiday Giving Gerties are for sale. They contain a pair of warm socks, hand warmers, some chocolate, a 2$ Tim Horton’s gift card (just enough for a warm drink), and a note of kindness. They also make fantastic stocking stuffers or advent gifts.
How you can help:
- Buy Giving Gerties and give them out to someone in need.
- Donate granola bars, socks or hand warmers.
- Make a cash donation to support creating more Giving Gerties.
- Host Giving Gerties at your business location.
- Volunteer at one of our events.
Thank you so much for being a Giving Gertie and helping to spread not so random acts of kindness throughout our community.
