Flying Officer Douglas Nugent Donald, age 23, member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, was killed in action on March 21, 1945.
Douglas was the son of Reverend Charles D. Donald and Fanny Donald. The Reverend Charles D. Donald was the minister at Southminster United Church and lived at 14 Aylmer Ave. Flying Officer Donald also left behind a young widow, Corinne Donald.
Flying Officer Donald was a Bomb Aimer serving with 214 Squadron of the RAF (many Canadians served with RAF units), he was killed when his B-17 Flying Fortress was shot down over Germany.
Douglas Nugent Donald never came home. His body is buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery in Germany, just south of Munich. He was just one of almost 100 men who died while on military service and listed the addresses of next-of-kin in (Old) Ottawa South during the First and Second World Wars. The personal inscription on his gravestone reads “YOUR MEMORY SHINES LIKE THE MORNING STAR.”
