Old Ottawa South has no shortage of community spirit when it comes to hockey, for athletes and fans alike. During the winter months, our community boasts numerous backyard rinks that are meticulously maintained by passionate ice-making enthusiasts. There’s also the ever-popular Windsor Park and Brewer Park outdoor rinks (ODR), where fun and friendly competition go hand in hand. Adults and youth lace up their skates and take to the ice to make lasting memories – and occasionally relive their glory days.
In the warmer months, street hockey takes over. It’s not uncommon to see multiple nets on a single block as neighbourhood kids (and the occasional adult) keep the game going year-round.
Adding to the vibrancy of the community, Lansdowne hosts the OHL’s 67s and the newly minted PWHL Ottawa Charge. The Charge, in particular, are rapidly proving themselves as a formidable presence – and as role models for young people in the community, especially girls in OOS.
For OOS families new to hockey, taking the first step can feel overwhelming. While local minor leagues offer great opportunities, they often require a significant upfront commitment that can be tough for beginners to manage.
Fortunately, there’s now a welcoming entry point. The NHL/NHLPA-sponsored First Shift program is designed for kids aged 6-10 who have never played before. It offers a fun, low-pressure introduction to the game – no experience necessary. The program will run at Brewer Arena starting January, 2026, with weekly ice times that are consistent and easy to schedule.
The First Shift program, delivered by the Ottawa Centre Minor Hockey Association (OCMHA), is a great way to get your child involved in the Ottawa Centre hockey community. Registration opens June 2 at 12 pm ET, with 30 spots available – 15 reserved for girls. For $299, participants receive six weeks of on-ice instruction led by our female head coach and supported by co-ed instructors, along with full Bauer equipment to keep. To learn more or register, visit www.firstshift.ca/the-program or contact Jack Rhoades at communications@ocmha.ca.
Whether your child is brand new to the game or looking for a gentle introduction, there’s never been a better time to join Ottawa’s proud hockey tradition.
