Hopewell School Needs Your Help!
Hopewell school is facing one of its biggest challenges. The primary yard may soon become a vacant asphalt wasteland without our help.
Last summer, the lovely, mature ash trees that shaded children at play were lost to the emerald ash borer beetle. All of the play structures, typically swarming with laughing kids at recess, have passed their “sell by” date, and will soon be removed. Although there was a plan to gradually improve the yard as time and money allowed, this sudden and dramatic change has demanded drastic action.
Hopewell parents and staff have formed a yard fundraising committee with a big challenge: raise $200,000 by March 1st, 2015 so that new trees and play areas can be put in place by fall 2015.
In many ways we see this challenge as a wonderful opportunity. It's time to bring new life to the yard by planting a greater number and diversity of trees in one of the community's last large green spaces. It's time to open up this space to every child in the community, not just Hopewell students.
The campaign, launched December 1st 2014, has raised just over $15,000 to date. That's impressive, but we still have a very long way to go.
There are many ways you can help. Start your own campaign to raise funds for the yard. Plan to attend upcoming fundraising activities in January-February, including a Movie Night at the Mayfair, Trivia and Pub Night, as well as an auction featuring gifts from local businesses. Sponsor a Hopewell student at the Valentine's day dance-a-thon. Make a donation at bit.ly/hopewellyard , or send in a cheque to Hopewell School.
Please lend us your support, and give generously, to make the Hopewell Yard a beautiful, green community space for our children.
