Come rain or shine, on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, Old Ottawa South will host its first Capital Spokes Bike Rally & Rodeo

The event itself has two parts: a rally and a rodeo. Come to both—the rally begins at 9:00 a.m. at Brewer Park—or come to Windsor Park at 10:00 a.m. where our young cyclists will have an opportunity to demonstrate some of their best riding skills in obstacle courses designed to teach them the safer handling of their untamed bike broncos. Under the guidance of Safer Roads Ottawa, the tennis courts will serve as fenced-in safety corrals to practice turns, bike balance, and hand signals.

And, yes, there will be a fire truck and a police car!

The Ottawa Police will demonstrate how the 1M sonar device works for enforcing the 1M cycling law, firefighters will show kids how fire trucks work and illustrate some of the safety features that need to be observed around large vehicles, the Ottawa Paramedic Service will give out medical data carriers for kids to put on their helmets, and Safer Roads Ottawa will provide safe cycling gear such as arm bands, ankle straps, bells, lights, etc.

Free Volunteer Training on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Firehall

On Saturday June 10th at 10:30 a.m. at the Firehall, Safer Roads Ottawa will provide an overview of the event plus rally leadership training. CanBike specialists will guide a short in-class session followed by a ride along the Old Ottawa South rally route (see link below).

If your Saturday is already busy, please come for the first 45 minutes so that you can sign your volunteer waiver, pick up your ride leader "pinnie" or safety vest, and review traffic safety basics with the instructor.

If you are a pedestrian and do not cycle, you too can participate. Come to Windsor Park, meet the team from Safer Roads Ottawa, enjoy the fun and the energy of young cyclists.

As a community you get to decide if this is the kind of fun event that helps you teach and support safe cycling in our neighbourhood and in our City.  Let’s begin this Sunday, June 11th with exploring safe cycle routes in Old Ottawa South and our neighbouring communities. How do we make sure young cyclists have the tools and know-how to travel safely? Your input and feedback will help shape how we can improve this fun educational event in years to come.

All are welcome!
