Though now based in Toronto, saxophonist Alison Young was born and raised in Ottawa, where she attended Hopewell Avenue Public School and Lisgar Collegiate. Her debut CD, So Here We Are, has just been nominated for a JUNO in the Best Solo Jazz Album category.
Alison first picked up the saxophone at Hopewell under the direction of Allison Woyiwada: “In junior high I had this really great band teacher, and among other things she ran a stage band. That was the first time I heard swing music, and I was like, ‘What is that? I need to do this!’ ”
Alison has never looked back. After high school she went on to study jazz performance at the University of Toronto. In addition to leading her own group, she has accompanied notable Canadian musicians both in Canada and to Europe, Asia and South America; she is looking forward to a busy spring and summer, including a month-long tour from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Victoria, BC with Corey Hart and his band. (They play at the Canadian Tire Centre on June 12, 2019.)
Harriet Smith is Alison’s proud mother who faithfully attended all her school concerts!
