We've put together a bunch of fun, themed activities for children each week. We're calling them our virtual camps! Virtual camp weeks will consist of a special themed activity each day of the week. You can sign-up individually for whichever you'd like! They are coordinated by Darcy Middaugh & Katherine Boisvert.

July 6-10: Spy Week

Your little one will transform everyday objects into a fun "I-Spy" sensory bottle. Darcy and Katherine will provide you with a list of supplies and guide you through the steps.

DIY Decoders
AGES 6-12

Our OSCA secret service spies will create their own decoders to solve the mysteries of the Firehall. Darcy and Katherine will guide our spies through a series of steps to build their amazing spy tools.

Spy Training Circuit

Challenge yourself physically and gain the necessary skills to become a spy. Using items around the house, we will create amazing activities that you will want to try again and again. Compete against your friends over Zoom to multiply the fun.

Invisible Ink & fingerprinting

Every spy needs to know how to send and receive secret messages to one another. During this spy gathering, you will also learn the ins-and-outs about fingerprints and everything you need to know to avoid being detected. It'll bring a whole new meaning to "leaving no trace"!

Scavenger Mission Debrief

A secret message is hidden in your neighbourhood that we need your help to solve. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find the hidden clues hidden at Windsor Park and crack the code. An important message will be revealed that only top spies will gain access to.

July 13-17: Science Week

Virtual Minecraft LEGO Building
AGES 8-12
Wednesday to Friday 4:15PM-5:15PM

Free (Pay what you can) During this class, you'll virtually build cool Minecraft LEGO projects at home. Building activities will introduce you to the LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) application. Learn how to create and save builds and how to select, connect, rotate and copy pieces. Then, with LEGO instructions, build virtual Minecraft LEGO projects using pre-set parts libraries in LDD. All your projects can be saved on your computer for future use, and you will learn how to purchase individual LEGO pieces, if you want to build your online creations. With your knowledge of online LEGO building, you will be able to create other virtual projects to share at home. What you need for the course: 1) Computer to run LEGO Digital Designer and connect to Zoom; 2) Download and install LEGO Digital Designer. More information will be provided upon registration. No LEGO is needed at home. Space is limited to 10.

This is one EGG-CITING challenge! During this Firehall favourite, you will learn how eggtraordinary eggs are and will get to build your own egg-cellent egg protectors to see if they can survive gravity!

DIY Rocket Ships

Get ready to hit new heights with this program that reaches for the stars. Using materials found around the house, we will build rockets that can be used in the backyard or at the park.

Sink or Float
AGES 6-12

This popular challenge is being brought into your home (or your backyard). Using everyday materials, you will use science to help determine which items will sink and which will float. All you need is a large container to hold water (storage tote, small wading pool, etc.) and some household items and you are ready to join the fun!

Mad Kitchen Science

Uncover the secrets hidden in your kitchen cupboards. Katherine will guide you through a series of experiments using kitchen ingredients that are sure to blow your mind!

July 20-24 & August 4-7: Workshop with Indigo Girls

Indigo Girls is an organization run by young women for young women. Through diverse mediums, they aim to educate and create discussion surrounding current societal themes for girl's, themes relevant in both local and global contexts. They foster a safe, nonjudgmental, and supportive space to learn and engage together as growing young women. Please note that Indigo Girls welcomes all self-identifying young women to participate in these workshops. Indigo Girls aims to create a culture that is trans-friendly and supportive of diverse LGBTQI2S+ identities and expressions, where members are free from discrimination and harassment, treated with dignity, and are able to realize their full potential.

Workshop 1: Leadership

In today’s society, we often hear the term ‘leader’, but what does it really mean to be a leader? Girls will learn what it means to be a leader, how to define their inner leader and steps to becoming a positive leader among their peers. They will also learn about women in leadership and the workplace, and the challenges that they may face.

Workshop 2: Empowerment

Not only is self-empowerment important, empowering other women is just as crucial! This type of empowerment can start in your own family, school and neighbourhood!This workshop will aim to empower the girls as individuals and teach them to empower others along their journey.

Workshop 1: Fierce Conversations

This workshop will focus on encouraging girls to face difficult and fierce conversations head on. The girls will be given the tools needed to dive into confrontation without fear of being bossy, mean or aggressive.

Workshop 2: Success & Failures

This workshop will focus on what it means to be successful as a young girl and encourage the girls to define what success means to them. They will be provided with the tools and strategies to persevere when experiencing failures and obstacles in life while also creating goals to achieve their own versions of success. It will also discuss ways to support others when they are experiencing failure.

July 20-24: Leadership Week

Follow the Leader

Katherine and Darcy will LEAD your child through a series of fun and silly actions, faces, songs, stories, and dance moves all based on repetition and following the leader. It's sure to have your little one rolling on the floor giggling.

Join Darcy and Katherine for a special night around the campfire. Set up a tent or create your own campsite in your backyard or living room and participate in sing-a-longs, campfire stories, and of course s'mores. Since we aren't able to have overnight camps this year, this is the next best thing!

Behaviour Management

Re-direction. 360 Vision. Good programming. What do all three of these things have in common? They're components of behaviour management. During this workshop, our youth leaders will learn how the Firehall staff manage groups and run activities effectively. It's highly recommended for those wanting to volunteer with or work for the Firehall in the future!

Your First Job Interview: Tips & Tricks

Once you have your resumé and cover letter ready, you’ll start applying for jobs. The next part of the process is the job interview. Join OSCA’s program director, Sarah Cybulski, for a session all about tips and tricks in order to have a successful job interview.

Are you starting to look for your first job? Are you having a hard time creating a resumé and cover letter? Join OSCA’s program director, Sarah Cybulski, for a session all about tips and tricks for writing your first cover letter and resumé. Sarah will present examples and discuss things she’s noticed when reviewing applications for Firehall programs such as After-Four and Summer Camps.

Leadership Trivia & Week Debrief

You've learned a lot this week and now it is time to put your knowledge to the test! For youth leadership participants, we are offering this trivia challenge that can be played over a mobile device. Race your friends to the answer to gain more points and we will crown a winner at the end. Note: Participants will need a device to play the game on (tablet or mobile device recommended) and a second device to see their friends on Zoom.

Using recycled items around the house, children will learn how to make games and sports that they can play solo or with family. An artist's touch will be necessary so things like markers or paint, scissors, and glue or tape should be on hand.

Games are way better with friends. In Minute to Win It, children will be participating in different skill testing activities while competing in a fun way with their buddies. All items needed are common household items.

Egg-Carton Hunt

Join the LEGO® guy, Ian Dudley of Orange STEM Education, for online classes that will allow you to virtually build LEGO EV3 projects at home. Building activities will introduce you to the LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) application. Learn how to create and save builds, and how to select, rotate, connect and copy pieces. Then, with LEGO instructions, build virtual LEGO EV3 projects using pre-set parts libraries in LDD. All your projects can be saved on your computer for future use.
